History[edit | edit source]

Early Years to Present Day

In the early years of "Thefacebook" a name long forgotten or never learned, we see the creation of facebook was more over made for a need of a directory for photos and basic information. A basic system for viewing information was turned into a way to communicate between classmates in Harvard. After it was released to Harvard, it was taken down 6 days after. Mark Zuckerberg was accuse for intentionally misleading Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra into believing he would help them build a social network called HarvardConnection.com, suing him for almost 1.2 million shares for stealing their idea.

Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, Andrew McCollum, and Chris Hughes joined Zuckerberg to help promote the website. In March 2004, Facebook expanded to the universities of Columbia, Stanford, and Yale.It later opened to all Ivy League colleges, Boston University, New York University, MIT, and gradually most universities in Canada and the United States. A high-school version of the site was launched in September 2005, which Zuckerberg called the next logical step. At the time, high-school networks required an invitation to join. Facebook also expanded membership eligibility to employees of several companies, including Apple Inc. and Microsoft. Now it is one of the biggest social media sites widely used by over a billion people, the company ranking Zuckerberg in the top 20 Net Worth's,

In mid-2004, entrepreneur Sean Parker (an informal advisor to Zuckerberg) became the company's president. In June 2004, Facebook moved its operations base to Palo Alto, California. It received its first investment later that month from PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel. In 2005, the company dropped the from its name after purchasing the domain name facebook.com for US$200,000.

On September 26, 2006, Facebook was opened to everyone at least 13 years old with a valid email address

In late 2007, Facebook had 100,000 business pages, these pages allowed many businesses to freely advertise their business over Facebook!

On October 24, 2007, Microsoft announced that it had purchased a 1.6% share of Facebook for $240 million, giving Facebook a total implied value of around $15 billion.[38] Microsoft's purchase included rights to place international advertisements on the social networking site.

The company announced 500 million users in July 2010

Release of statistics by DoubleClick showed that Facebook reached one trillion page views in the month of June 2011, making it the most visited website tracked by DoubleClick.According to a Nielsen Media Research study, released in December 2011, Facebook had become the second-most accessed website in the U.S. behind Google.

"Alongside other American technology figures like Jeff Bezos and Tim Cook, Zuckerberg hosted visiting Chinese politician Lu Wei, known as the "Internet czar" for his influence in the enforcement of China's online policy, at Facebook's headquarters on December 8, 2014. The meeting occurred after Zuckerberg participated in a Q&A session at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, on October 23, 2014, where he attempted to converse in Mandarin—although Facebook is banned in China, Zuckerberg is highly regarded among the people and was at the university to help fuel the nation's burgeoning entrepreneur sector.A book of Chinese president Xi Xinping found on Zuckerberg's office desk attracted a great deal of attention in the media, after the Facebook founder explained to Lu, "I want them [Facebook staff] to understand socialism with Chinese characteristics.""

Impact[edit | edit source]

Social

Facebook has affected the social life and activity of people in various ways. With its availability on many mobile devices, Facebook allows users to continuously stay in touch with friends, relatives and other acquaintances wherever they are in the world, as long as there is access to the Internet. It can also unite people with common interests and/or beliefs through groups and other pages, and has been known to reunite lost family members and friends because of the widespread reach of its network

Health

Recent studies have shown that Facebook causes negative effects on self-esteem by triggering feelings of envy, with vacation and holiday photos proving to be the largest resentment triggers. Other prevalent causes of envy include posts by friends about family happiness and images of physical beauty—such envious feelings leave people lonely and dissatisfied with their own lives. A joint study by two German universities discovered that one out of three people were more dissatisfied with their lives after visiting Facebook, and another study by Utah Valley University found that college students felt worse about their own lives following an increase in the amount of time spent on Facebook.

Media

Generally Facebook has been one of the biggest stepping stones for all kinds of media, From big time TV shows like American Idol and True Blood to the now new social medias such as Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and Tumblr. But after time passes it still remains one of the top companies still expanding its wings to newer methods. News and media outlets such as the Washington Post, Financial Times and ABC News have used aggregated Facebook fan data to create various infographics and charts to accompany their articles. In 2012, the beauty pageant Miss Sri Lanka Online was run exclusively using Facebook.

Political

In February 2008, a Facebook group called "One Million Voices Against FARC" organized an event in which hundreds of thousands of Colombians marched in protest against the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, better known as the FARC.In August 2010, one of North Korea's official government websites and the official news agency of the country, Uriminzokkiri, joined Facebook.

Original Features to Normality[edit | edit source]

Facebook became an innovator for social media because it added features previously never seen! This game changer made it more original but now it is more like a normal thing for most social media to have, almost a must actually, earlier I mentioned Facebook was like a big brother, these features are one of the biggest reason why it's like that, the features it has was passed to many new forms of social media but slightly tweaked to different means to fit different things.

News Feed

One of the biggest innovations of Facebook has been the news feed, a way to see new content facebook, the pages you like, and your friends/family send you, whether it be a game invite or some news about a panda stuck in a tree the news feed is one of the features you use daily because it's common now on many different social media platforms! The feed was updated so you not only see everyday content but also the most popular content being shown, usually some big news;ex. Kony 2012 and the Baltimore riots were widely spread by Facebooks news feed.

Timeline

The timeline is one of the newer functions Facebook has developed; what it does is it shows you're "life" on Facebook in other words it will give you everything you did in certain time on Facebook over a timeline format, it is actually one of the most useful features Facebook has because it's like a story of your own growing up!

Like

The like feature was probably the most "liked" things in Facebook... Let my pun sync in. Basically the like feature was made for the fact if you enjoyed certain content you could like it; This feature makes it so that you can appreciate content but also facebook uses it so something with many likes can be a feature News Feed post which in most cases something that reaches up to about about 500,000 likes will start to show up on everyone's News Feed!
